After 25 years of educational and outreach projects, Yoruba CAT is developing its own educational resources for use within schools, educational and community settings.

Called the Yoruba Music Academy, we provide music lessons rooted in Yoruba mythology, practicals based on the use of traditional African musical instruments, and a vibrant learning community.
We have explored the world of the Yorùbá Orìsà with young people for many years. The richness of the stories and songs has been popular in the classroom. The Orisa have been described as the Yoruba Pantheon, and as such this is a way to engage with the material, relating it to the Egyptian gods and goddesses, Greek mythology and creation myths from all over the world.

The resources will include:

An Orìsà songbook–available as an ebook and separate songs. Digital learning materials for each song.

A creation myth story which can be performed alongside the songs to create a school play or used as a story within class.

An introduction to Yoruba music via a series of short explainer videos emphasizing different elements such as: clave, clave patterns, syllables used for rhythmic patterns, an introduction to different percussions and hand drums.

Teacher resources linking to key stage content and subjects.

Our creative ensemble not only deliver performances of Yoruba and related cultural material but also deliver specific workshops around the subject matter.
